Terms & Conditions
These terms describe the basis on which Lanna Timeworks accepts watches for service and carries out repair work at our workshop in Chiang Mai. We have written them in plain language, because we believe the relationship between a watchmaker and the owner of a watch should rest on clear understanding rather than small print.
Last reviewed: 1 January 2025
By leaving a watch with us for assessment or service, or by requesting work through our website or by telephone, you agree to these terms. If anything here is unclear, please speak with us before proceeding — we would rather resolve a question at the outset than encounter a misunderstanding later.
1. Acceptance of Work
We assess each piece before committing to carry out any work. The initial assessment is non-invasive — we examine the exterior and take note of the movement type, condition, and the owner's account of its history and any issues observed.
We reserve the right to decline work on any piece where we judge that the work required falls outside our current capability, where parts are unavailable, or where proceeding would be unlikely to produce a satisfactory outcome. In such cases we will explain our reasoning clearly and return the piece to you without charge.
2. Estimates and Authorisation
No work is carried out before you have received and accepted a written estimate. Estimates include the scope of work, the anticipated cost, and the expected timeline. We will not commence work until we have received your explicit agreement to proceed.
In some cases, further disassembly is required to complete a full assessment. Where this is necessary, we will inform you before proceeding and will not carry out that additional step without your agreement.
If during the course of service we discover additional work that we believe is necessary — for example, if a mainspring is found to be fatigued upon full disassembly — we will contact you with a revised estimate before proceeding. The additional work will not be done without your authorisation.
3. Service Timelines
The timelines given in our estimates are our best professional assessment of the time required. They are not contractual deadlines. Watch servicing involves variables that cannot always be anticipated: the condition of movement oil, the availability of specific parts, and the time required to source components that are no longer in standard production.
We will keep you informed of progress throughout the service and will contact you promptly if we expect a material change to the anticipated timeline. Owners of vintage wristwatches undergoing full refurbishment should anticipate five to eight weeks as a standard working period. Chronograph overhauls may run between six and ten weeks. Quartz services are typically completed within the same working week.
We do not accept requests for expedited timelines. Our workshop handles each piece at the pace the work requires.
4. Parts and Materials
Where original or period-correct parts are available, we use them. Where they are not, we will discuss options with you before sourcing alternatives. We do not use parts of unknown provenance or quality without informing you of the situation.
Parts used in a service become part of the final cost. Where parts are sourced from specialist suppliers, the cost of those parts is passed on at our cost price, without markup. Lubricants, cleaning solutions, and workshop consumables are included in the service charge.
5. Collection and Uncollected Pieces
When a service is complete, we will contact you to arrange collection or, where agreed, return by insured postal courier. Payment is due at the time of collection or prior to dispatch.
If a completed piece is not collected within ninety days of our completion notice, despite reasonable attempts to contact the owner, we reserve the right to charge a storage fee for any period beyond that point. If after one year no contact has been established and no arrangement made, we reserve the right to dispose of the piece in accordance with applicable Thai law.
Pieces left for assessment that are not proceeded with should be collected within thirty days of our assessment report. After this period the same storage provisions apply.
6. Liability
We take considerable care with every piece in our workshop. In the unlikely event that a watch suffers damage while in our care due to our error or negligence, we will acknowledge this openly and discuss a fair resolution with you.
However, watches — particularly older mechanical pieces — sometimes present pre-existing conditions that are not apparent during initial assessment. Where a movement component fails during a service for reasons relating to its age or pre-existing condition, this is not our liability. We will always communicate clearly when this occurs.
Our liability in any case is limited to the cost of the service carried out. We do not accept liability for the sentimental value of a piece, any claimed collectible value beyond the cost of equivalent restoration, or consequential losses of any kind.
7. Service Warranty
We stand behind the work we do. Services completed by Lanna Timeworks carry a twelve-month workshop warranty against defects in our workmanship. This means that if a problem arises from our service within twelve months of return, we will examine the piece and carry out any remedial work at no charge.
This warranty does not cover damage resulting from impact, water ingress beyond the watch's rated depth, battery leakage, or wear caused by normal use. It does not apply to components we identified as marginal or near end-of-life at the time of service. Our warranty is specific to the work carried out; it is not a general assurance on the condition of the movement as a whole.
8. Governing Law
These terms are governed by the laws of Thailand. Any dispute arising from our services will be subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of Chiang Mai Province, unless both parties agree to an alternative means of resolution.
9. Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The version that applies to any particular service is the version in effect at the time you leave a watch with us or formally authorise work to proceed. We will note the date of the most recent review at the top of this page.
